The SURGE Hub

The SURGE sandbox is a ~5,000 sq. ft. space housed In the Department of Oceanography in the Life Sciences Centre of Dalhousie University. It is designed as a flexible space for teaching, workshops, demonstrations, and coworking. The space contains worktables, seating for 48 people, an AV system for presentation, hardware resources for creative scientific exploration and demonstration, and staff office space.

Accessibility at SURGE

Getting here

  • Entrance: Ramp with automated door, on the walkway between Shirreff Hall and the Life Sciences Centre. No steps or elevators to reach SURGE.

  • SURGE doors: Not automated, but wide enough for mobility aids and usually propped open during events.

  • Drop-off: Next to Wickwire Field (gentler slope) or in the Beaty Centre parking lot.

  • Bus: Nearest stop is next to the Dalplex.

  • Parking: Free next to Wickwire Field on weekends. No lot parking on weekdays unless you have a Dalhousie Parking Pass.

Seating

  • Tall desks (standing or stools), low couches with laptop tables, and office chairs.

  • All furniture is movable and can be rearranged on request.

  • We don't currently have a standard-height desk.

Washrooms

  • Accessible, non-gendered with changing tables: Next door in the Beaty Centre (ramp entrance).

  • Gendered, not accessible: Right outside SURGE.

Sensory environment

  • Lighting: Overhead fluorescent, not adjustable.

  • Noise: Can be loud when busy.

  • Power outlets: Hang from the ceiling and can be hard to reach, we can always assist you.

Events

  • Captioning: Usually available for live events.

  • Food: All dietary restrictions accommodated.

Service animals

Service animals are welcome.

  • Killam Library, Room 3105: open weekends

  • LeMarchant Place, Room 2302: Saturdays 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed Sundays

  • Student Union Building, Room 22: open weekends
